Only Svalbard reindeer, arctic foxes, Svalbard ptarmigans and a few other birds, in addition to some seal species, may be hunted. The Governor of Svalbard has officers who gather data which enable the scale of hunting and trapping to be monitored. It is trapped for its highly insulative fur. Few are now killed.
