Hunting and trapping

Hunting and trapping in Svalbard are regulated to prevent the size and composition of the stocks being affected. Only Svalbard reindeer, arctic foxes, Svalbard ptarmigans and a few other birds, in addition to some seal species, may be hunted. The Governor of Svalbard has officers who gather data which enable the scale of hunting and trapping to be monitored. The polar bear bag is also presented here, even though no hunting has taken place after the species was protected in 1973.
